Gagan Thapa said he had not pulled out of the election for the party’s general secretary during the ongoing 13th national general convention of the party.Amid rumours that he withdrew the candidacy, Thapa organised a press meet at Bhrikutimandap, the general convention venue, this afternoon to clear the misleading reports. The youth leader said he was determined to compete for the powerful position representing all youth members of the party in order to transform it.“I want to change the format of politics in Nepali Congress… I want to transform the Nepali Congress party itself. The Nepali Congress party today is not the mass-based, it should be based on all people,” he argued the party should scrap the selection-based active membership system. Dubbing his competition with own father-in-law Arjun Narsingha KC for the post as a moral question, Thapa said he, however, would not pull out from the race. “I did not decide to file the candidacy by watching whose father and whose son are competing… It is not my concern who is competing.”“This is a responsibility assigned to our generation by the time,” he said referring to the need to develop youth leadership in the party, “No any friend showed interest to bear it; but I am here to take the risk.”He also denied the charges that he had filed the nomination strategically to elect KC to the post and stop Shashanka Koirala, another contender for the post from the Ram Chandra Paudel-led panel. -
