Despite the growing activism against animal cruelty in Peru, the country’s bullfighting industry continues to be the biggest in South America.Video footage has gone viral of a recent celebration that includes a running of the bulls event in the Huancavelica region of Cusco, a tradition that saw eight people get injured on Saturday, according to the Huffington Post.

The annual event takes place over a four-day period, between Dec. 30 and Jan. 2, and entails the releasing of bulls into a crowd, primarily men, who run and chase the bull.International Business Times reports that the bullfighting industry organizes about 540 bullfights a year in Peru and most of them take place in Cajamarca, Lima and Ancash regions.Prior to touring through Lima, British singer Morrissey recently wrote a plea to Peru to call the country to end the centuries-old tradition.

Another event that has received criticism is the Yawar Fiesta. The Andean tradition is an annual celebration in which a condor is strapped to the head of a bull, enticing the two animals in a battle. The battle has long represented the struggle of native Peruvians against the colonial Spanish. Unfortunately, the event often results in the injury or death of one or both of the animals.
